First of All, Love Them

As a guardian ad litem for over 15 years I have been associated with many wonderful foster parents. In general, they have provided love and care for my guardian children. The best provide educational, nutritional, medical, plus many examples of parental support. For example, vacation beach trips and fishing trips and summer camps for their foster children. Their own bedrooms, delicious meals, swing sets, pets, toys, church opportunities, sharing time, advice and discipline. They treat them like their own children, but I have witnessed some hurtful things, too. I used to have a foster family who put their foster children in respite care on holidays or their own family events, sending a message of rejection to their foster children. All of my children have experienced neglect, abuse, each of love and rejection. Foster parents have to be “parents” who love, first of all.
